At the core of learning is relationship.
Young students thrive not only on information but on empathy, encouragement, and inspiration. Human interaction can detect subtle signs of confusion, emotional distress, or breakthrough moments that AI cannot fully perceive or respond to with appropriate care. Algorithms are not intuitive and children are not robots.
Artificial intelligence is a tool, not a teacher. Our role as educators is to help students harness their curiosity while keeping it anchored in purposeful inquiry. While technology can support holistic learning, there is more to education than just date optimization.
NHHSA thoughtfully embraces the unparallelled access to knowledge that AI offers and recognizes that it should be meaninfully integrated into a learning environment that remains grounded in human principles.
Ethical oversight continues to be of paramount when working with children. Decisions about what is taught, how data is collected and used, and how children are assessed or categorized must be made by adults who understand context, nuance, and the dignity of the student. AI is not designed to uphold moral accountability.
To integrate AI into our learning environments, NHHSA believes that we must rethink what we assess and why.
We should teach students to use AI transparently and productively toward the satisfaction of respectable goals (i.e., the refinement of uniquely human skills or the capacity for creative thinking). One promising approach would be to shift our assessment from product to process. AI demands a grading model that evaluates how students arrive at their work, not just the final result. This means examining how they frame questions, craft prompts, revise outputs, and reflect on the insights gained through its use.
Education is not just about facts. It’s about developing minds and growing hearts. Creativity, resilience, collaboration, and moral reasoning are cultivated through rich, real-world interactions that require human modeling.
Education is not a codebase, and neither are children. The human learning experience is a living space where mistakes, laughter, struggles, and triumphs happen daily. Only human beings can respond fluidly and adaptively to the unpredictable nature of child's learning journey. We believe this to be irreplaceable.
